Zorin OS 9 might be the best Windows alternative available right now.

Windows Users Will Find Zorin OS 9 a Good Alternative for Their OS

The final version of Zorin OS 9, an Ubuntu-based operating system aimed at Windows users who are switching over to Linux, is now out and is available for download.

Lots of Linux distros claim that they can replace Windows, but very few go the extra mile in order to provide a similar experience with the products built by Microsoft, like a dedicated desktop environment, for example.

Unlike other operating systems that just copy the style and look of Windows, the Zorin developers decided that they should try a different approach. Instead of just making assets that only look alike, they managed to build a system that feels unique, but that is still familiar for potential Windows users.

Zorin OS 9 is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr), the OS built by Canonical that was made available only a few months ago. Ubuntu 14.04 LTS is supported until 2019 and the Zorin OS devs have promised to do the same with their system, although it's unclear what will happen in two years’ time, when the next LTS is out.

“The main focus for Zorin OS 9 has been on stability and the refinement of Zorin OS’s wide array of incredible features. Firstly, Zorin OS 9 includes a myriad of updated software and bug fixes to ensure that your computer runs better than ever. New applications such as the Firefox Web Browser and Rhythmbox Music Player have also been included in this release. EFI boot support has been added, making it easier to get Zorin OS on newer computers (64 bit only).”

“In addition, we have introduced a new Blue desktop theme to the Zorin Theme Changer in complement to the Light and Dark themes. As Zorin OS 9 is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS you can expect to receive continuous software updates until 2019, making it the ideal operating system for large-scale deployments,” noted the devs.

Zorin OS 9 uses the Zorin Desktop Environment and the Zorin Looks Changer to make the transition from Windows towards Linux much easier. The transition is made on the fly and it's probably the only application of its kind. Users will have access to six different themes that should prove more than enough for any user that has just migrated from Windows.

I have looked at this further (ie Reviews from users/posters/newbs/trolls etc 39 at the webpage-~50 more online in all), and I still couldn't get past the ambiguity... "Can this be installed after my download, with Win 7 Ult installed; will it install over it as a replacement? OR, Do I have to create another partition for this OS?

Thanks for the post... Cheers

You need to create a new partition of around 30 Gb for the Zorin system and format this to ext3 or ext4 (NOT NTFS), then make a swap partition of around 4 Gb immediately before the Zorin partition. If installed correctly, you will have a dual boot system giving you the option at boot up as to which OS you wish to boot into. The Zorin OS will have no effect on your Windows 7 installation if done correctly.

Download the Zorin OS and burn onto a DVD, then boot into Zorin for a test run which will allow you to run it from the DVD without installing anything. If your comfortable with the version running from the DVD you can select to install the OS from within the live version running from the DVD to the partition you will have previously created. Note. the actual Zorin install will allow you to reformat your selected partition for the OS from either fat32/NTFS to the required ext3 or ext4 file format required to run this distro.

I was running Zorin 8 for some months in dual boot Windows 7 machine but swapped over to the Linux Mint 17 disto which I found was a better system for my needs than Zorin however it gets back to personal choice. As long as you set up the partitions correctly, you can't really go wrong but as first step I'd play around with the "live" version running from the DVD to see how you go with it before committing to a full blown installation to the computer. :)

great post thank you , im very interested in this

My question it what about a dual boot with windows 8.1 ?

Have heard or read somewhere that 8.1 doesn't like Linux dual booting ?

Doesn't seem to dislike MAC at all (actually solved a huge MAC dual booting issue for me) - Mac is OK but limited

I do Have a Spare 160GB HDD i could put it on & dual boot with Easybcd & i Reboot , would this be a better option do you think ?

Good tips there, thanks Haggis. :ok:

:icon_idea: For my initial testing purposes, I never go with any kind of dual boot setup... I always volunteer an older, used disk (and sometimes an entire redundant system) for a dedicated installation. Never assume that one OS will coexist happily with another - "Caution" should always be your watchword!

Keep your production/daily use system away from your testing environment for as long as it takes for you to get comfortable/confident with the new OS being tested!

Once you know that you have a winner/keeper, then by all means go the dual-boot route, using a fresh install.

And before you commit any major changes... need I mention "Backups"???

Because Windows 8 uses the UEFI Secure Boot system you have to have a UEFI-compatible Linux distro such as openSuSE, Fedora, Linux Mint, Zorin 9 (X64 only) and Ubuntu (there are others but you need to confirm that whatever version you try it is UEFI-compatible). Using the standard Linux GRUB bootloader as the default boot object to control dual-booting with Windows 8/8.1 is a preferable option and usually works well.

With a UEFI Secure Boot compatible Linux distro you shouldn't have to change any of the UEFI configuration settings although you can choose to disable Secure Boot if you so desire.

When you install a UEFI-compatible Linux distro, if everything works as it should and the UEFI firmware configuration works properly then when you reboot after installation completes you will get the GRUB boot menu allowing you to be able to choose either Linux (the default) or Windows 8/8.1 to boot up.
