Cracking Help

Decided I wanted to try cracking. I have read some tuts (that are from at least 15 years ago), but don't know where to start. Where would be a good place for me to start and what are some tools that are basically necessary (I am assuming I'll need a good decompiler). I am working on cracking Windows applications.
