[a]nd I am so bloody confused right now...

I have no idea what 's going on here. I installed and then it wouldn't run afterwards without the ISO I had burned. Then I just left it in, restarted three or four times, and then it was running like an OS should run.

I need to be walked through this install a bit cuz I really would like to replace windows.

Any hints / tips / or links ready at hand would be appreciated.

Which version 17.3 (32/64)? There are three......Cinnamon, KDE and Mate, all with slightly different capabilities (Cinnamon is the best graphical option, KDE is more for development, if you are that way inclined. Mate is for antique PC's).

Firstly I would (if you have made a permanent installation);

1:Download the latest version of Firefox; install and tweak to your preferences.
2:Install a GUI for your firewall. http://gufw.org/
3:Go to Mint forums and register. http://forums.linuxmint.com/

When you first boot from the ISO, it runs the OS solely from the removable media known as "Live Mode", it installs nothing on the actual hard drive. Have you actually installed the OS or are you simply running it from the media disk in Live Mode?

To actually install it on your hard drive you need to select the "Install" icon on the Mint desktop and follow the prompts.

If its installed on a dual boot system Linux will automatically install the Grub boot loader which replaces the default Windows loader and allows you to select at each boot up which OS (Linux or Windows) you wish to boot into.

Once you get your head around the initial install and boot up menu, the learning curve really begins but its not as difficult as it may first appear.

My eyes were a bit bleary earlier on.
If you are running the DVD as a "live session" once you reboot, you will find you have only wasted broadband downloading stuff. Mind you, live sessions are a good way of determining whether your system works in a capable manner, ie, Sound Card, Video Driver, Network etc.

As Haggisman has said, you have the option to either install as dual boot or fully. I chose to install fully as I was running other machines at the time, which is always helpful if you run into problems. Dual booting is the easy option, but, and this is a small "but", sometimes, you can run into difficulty’s with driver conflicts between Windows and Linux with a dual boot set up. Its becoming scarce, but, it does happen.

For any software you should stick to your software manager to kick off with. There are other ways to install stuff, but, just keep it simple in the beginning, until you start to find your way around.

One thing that is always a breath taker..............Linux does not have a native "System Restore Point"
Do not let that put you off, there are applications that will do this job very nicely!

You will find limitations within Linux Mint, but some tlc will smooth the way.

I have lost count of the re-installs and re-boots I have done, just to get things right. The frustration has had me thinking I should go back to Microsoft for simplicity’s sake. Noooooooooo, just keep on trying, its well worth it in the end.

One last thing in this post................IF YOU DELETE ANYTHING USING RIGHT CLICK DELETE, its gone! Use "Send To Rubbish Bin" instead.
(You can configure the options in the Context Menu, maybe before you delete a directory )
