I have really been looking into Ubuntu O/S and their Cinnamon interface for an x86 (32 bit) O/S.

My first question is:

1) Is Linux Ubuntu or what? I don't understand this most simple thing.


This is the reason for my treading lightly, and going to another Operating System...

In a nutshell, Monday... Linux is a development of Unix.

Ubuntu is a development/offshoot of Linux.

Most of the current Distros are simply repackaged Distributions of the latter two, offering their own more user friendly Desktop/Shell or GUI. Some well-known ones would be Mint, Fedora, Red Hat and Zorin. Mint has often been recommended for beginner Unix/Linux users.

Think of this evolution from the original Unix as a parallel to DOS, followed by Windows in several loved/hated versions.

I can recommend Zorin, which is available in Lite as well as full 32- and 64-bit versions. It is an easy install and fairly intuitive to use, being a GUI.

Perhaps ask Witchbitch for her assessment as a new user - I pointed her in that direction some weeks ago.

Only to reiterate what OTL has already said and strengthen his case for promoting the use of Full Zorin OS 10. I am actually using this 32bit system on my old machine (single core processor, 3gb ram etc, blah and I am sure it works faster and possibly better than it did with Windows 7) as my main downloading tool.

Dont get me wrong, it was no walk in the park but once there it does what it should do. Two or three days head banging, scratching and then enlightenment.

Firewall installed, Blocklist installed along with Peerguardian. Tixati torrent client (all whistles and bells). No need for AV!

There are some cool tools included with the OS and a ton of stuff to download and fiddle with too.

The best thing since sliced bread mate.

For the simplest install of Zorin, use a "scratch" hard drive on an old machine for which you no longer have any real use. As long as it can boot from the OS install image DVD or a USB stick (prep it as a bootable unit using Rufus, now in v2.3 guise), it is an easy Home Run.

All of a sudden, that old Warhorse will become remarkably useful again.

I think Mobius tried to make his install go smoothly by first buttering his laptop's internals. As he of all people should know, this approach didn't even work for the Mad Hatter. Too many crumbs, as I recall.
