Which Linux

Post by Miami_Steve »

Hi I have a spare computer I want to put Linux on,
after doing a bit of searching I came across Ubuntu
is this the best choice ?, I really have no clue on Linux
I want it as a OS, not with Windows but stand alone
and what about Firewall and Anti-Virus software,
and help gratefully received.

its best to go with ubuntu, in my experiance ubuntu 10.4 Link removed is the best version to start with because it is easy to navagate and is more user friendly than any other unix os i have used, the best part is it is free, you can also find older versions to play around with on torrent sites like the one provided (kickasstorrents.ph) and it (unix) is very low on system resources. in all (minus the compatability) unix is a great os. it is also great for a recovery OS because you can run it off a disc as a full os and recover windows files etc with out formating or installing a new os.

and unix is a secure os on its own meaning it has its own firewall simalar to mac and no need to install a antivirus (if even possible) because unix is a os that hackers absolutly HATE because the script is so complex and difficult to decrypt it isnt even worth their time, wich is why the us military uses linux as well.

Ubuntu! if you wish to make it a server then Debian.. but not CentOS as its very complicated.

i would reccomend fedora ... in my opinion its still the best choice. Installing software is as easy as double click a .exe file (same as with ubuntu) i have given fedora to alot of my friend to play with and they realy like it ... however i have to say ... i realy dislike alot of new linuz distros.

when you get more familiar with linux then let us know and we can advise you on which is the best next step !
