A portable Linux build incorporating a virtual DVD drive

Post by OnTheLimit »

I was interested in build a portable OS with a virtual cd/dvd drive installed on it. Then I would simply copy some virus rescue .iso images that theoretically could be loaded from within the distro onto the virtual cd/dvd drive. That way a large flash drive could hold a collection and load one .iso at a time, without imposing all of them into memory.

When repairing a small old computer, Windows becomes a large footprint and leaves little room for repair iso’s. What I found looks like an impressive tiny Linux distro, Porteus; the emphasis here is on "portable".

What blew me away was on this page. You can build it to order! Got one for myself down to 182 MB. I recommend x86 - ALL machines can use it.

And here's lots of help and How-To instructions...
